William Harrington
William Harrington was born in Russell, Ontario on April 11, 1846 to William and Mary Harrington. When he was twelve years old they immigrated to New York State.
"William fought in the civil war. He served in the Second New York Calvary and served under Custer. In the battle of Cedar Creek he was wounded and left all night on the field." - from the obituary - Charlevoix County Herald, November 11, 1932
William migrated to Michigan in 1870. On June 12, 1875, William married Tillie Clark in Cheboygan, Michigan. They lived in Inverness, Michigan for awhile, then settled in East Jordan, Charlevoix County. William and Tillie had six children though they both outlived two of them.
William was the sheriff of Cheboygan. Later he was the post master of East Jordan for many years. In 1905, he worked as head janitor of the State House of Representatives in Lansing, Michigan, and then deputy sheriff of Charlevoix County. He was a member of the Masonic lodge for 62 years.
In 1912 William was having considerable trouble with his eyes. He even travelled as far as Milwaukee to seek treatment for them.
In 1915 a fire destroyed their house , though they were able to save most of contents in the lower rooms.
He was seeking treatment for rheumatism in 1921.
William died on November 6, 1932 in East Jordan at the age of 86. In 1934, Tillie ordered a veteran's tombstone marker for William.
Tillie died three years later, on November 23. She was 83 years old. Both are buried in Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.
