Jennie Cook


Jennie Cook was born October 22, 1903 just after her parents returned to Cheboygan from Tacoma, Washington. Her dad died when she was just 9 years old, so her grandmother lived with them after her grandfather Brannack died.

Jennie was very popular in high school. She was unanimiously selected as the junior class secretary and treasurer. She was also the captain of the junior highschool basketball team.

After graduating highschool, she worked at the Ottawa Hotel before heading off to Ypsilanti Normal School to become a teacher. She taught at the Royal Oak school in Detroit for several years. In 1930 she was boarding in Oakland County, Michigan and working at as Public School teacher.

Jennie survived a serious accident in 1927 when the brand new Paige Coupe she was riding in flipped over

At the end of 1934 or early 1935, she married Alabama born Elbert Johnson in Indiana. He was an inspector at General Motors in Detroit. In 1940, Elbert's 19 year old son Robert, and Jennie's brother Levane were staying with them. Jennie was still teaching public school.

Elbert died in 1985. Jennie died in December 2003 at 100 years of age. Both of them died in Cheboygan.

Jennie had any children of her own, though there were a few step children that belonged to Elbert.

court case involving Jennie's Will stated that "Johnson was strong willed and mentally competent to handle her own affairs" in the later years of her life, even though she lived to 100.
