Thomas McGown was born November 22, 1855 in Thornbury, Ontario to Thomas and Ellen (Mahoney) McGown.  He was the oldest of seven children.

The family moved to Parry Sound between 1861 and 1871 and settled to farming in Foley Township.

On May 5, 1886 Thomas married Ida Little. They had six children.

Thomas was only 45 when he died on April 7, 1901 two years before his father died.  Ida lived for another 52 years until 1953.
