Peter Brown


Peter Brown was the only child of Wilfrid Brown and Helen Caulder.  He was born July 17, 1931 in Toronto, Ontario. 

Peter married Shirley Nesbitt of Ottawa on September 2, 1961. They had three children though one daughter died young.

Peter died on September 19, 2019 in Vero Beach, Florida.

Peter W. Brown, 88, died September 19, 2019 at Vero Beach, Florida.

He was born in Toronto and lived in Vero Beach, Florida, having come from Regina Saskatchewan, Doylestown Pennsylvania, Redding Connecticut, and Wilmington New York.

He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as a Professional Engineer and obtained a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Western Ontario.

He met and married the everlasting love of his life Shirley while they were both attending the University of Western Ontario, and they subsequently had three children, Michael, Terri and Suzanne.

He began his professional career as a power plant sales and service engineer with an industrial instrumentation company, and fulfilled the same function for a number of years with the Canadian Navy, outfitting and certifying installations on a new class of destroyer escort vessels.

After receiving his MBA he joined a pharmaceutical company in Toronto in the manufacturing division, rising to the position of Vice President. A transfer placed him in charge of all U.S. operations, and he subsequently moved to an international division as Director of Operations having responsibility for manufacturing and distribution in 17 countries in the Americas and Far East. His wife Shirley accompanied him as a good will ambassador to Mexico, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

In 1982 he left the corporate world and bought his own business, the Four Seasons Motor Lodge and Restaurant at the base of Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, NY, which he and Shirley operated for 15 years. They sold the business and retired to the nearby town of Jay, NY. Soon after she passed away he moved to Vero Beach, Florida.

Mr. Brown was an accomplished intercollegiate swimmer, having won 9 of his 10 events, and set a new record for the 100 freestyle. He received a swimming Honor Award from Regina College, and in 1949 was declared the Prairie Provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta) Swim Champion. He was a YMCA Senior Master Swimmer and Senior Life Saver. He coached the university women’s swim team and was a gymnastic instructor specializing in trampoline and high bar. He enjoyed skiing, curling, bowling and golf.

He was dedicated to community service, serving in various positions throughout his life. As a teenager he was the Aquatic Director of the Regina Boys and Girls Fair. While in Engineering school he was the intramural swimming manager and on both the Athletic and Social Boards. He was President of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He was a Planning Board member and President of the Chamber of Commerce in Wilmington, New York, Chairman of the Essex County Liquor Dealers Association, and Treasurer of his two Florida Homeowners Associations and the Vero Beach Power Squadron.

He is survived by his son Michael, daughter Suzanne, sisters-in-law Marion Alexander and Dorothy Chisholm, and grandchildren Jordan, Jacob and Chloe.

He was predeceased in death by Shirley, his wife of 45 years, daughter Terri, daughter-in-law Alice and brothers-in-law Stan Alexander and Jim Chisholm.
