John Henry Jones was born in Rhosygwalia, Monmouth, Wales in 1826.  Apparently his father's name was William Pritchard.  John was a Baptist Minister in Wales.

On April 11, 1857 he married Mary Alice Jones, also from Wales, in Manchester, England.  John worked for the Corporation at the Gas Works in Manchester, but was also a local preacher according to the 1861 census.

John and Mary had three children in Manchester before immigrating to Canada between 1862 and 1864.  They had seven more children in Canada, six of them girls.

The 1871 census lists them in Croydon, Ontario, while future census have them settled in Sheffield Township.

John died on November 26, 1898 from pneumonia and was buried in the Tamworth United Church cemetery.
