John Clark

John Clark was the sixth child, and third son of James and Jane Clark. He was born in Hinchenbrook, Quebec on February 5, 1848, and died across the country at the age of 72 in California while visiting his brother Thomas.

John was a farmer in Mullet Lake area south of Cheboygan for many years. He was well loved by family members, as they came to visit him often. In 1891, the local newspaper through out a tease "One would think by the way J. Clark is fixing up his place that he is looking for a wife, but he says not, it is all ambition."

Five years later he finally did get married at the age of 48 to a 36 year old twice previously married dressmaker by the name of Jenny Taylor. Her sister Lillian had lived with John's brother Oliver and his wife years earlier in Cheboygan. John's niece Henrietta Brannack was one of the witnesses to their marriage. Unfortunately that marriage did not last long as Jennie died in 1901.

John had a close call in 1900. When he was sitting in the station, the lightning strike followed the wire into the building and burned out a wire just short of where he was.

John married five years later to Matilda Thompson. Matilda's maiden name was Fassett, but she was also married to a Moses Duclo at one time with whom she had children.

On the 1910 census John is listed as working as a Blacksmith in Butte California while Matilda is in Colorado Springs living with her son George. The settled in Colorado Springs by 1915.

In 1920 John is listed as a man of all labour at a local college. After receiving word that his brother Thomas Clark had a stroke in Hamilton City, Glenn County, California, John and Matilda travelled to his place to assist him. While they were there, John died from influenza on April 27th. Thomas died on April 30th. Within the week Matilda tripped on a rug and broke her arm. She survived for another year, dying in Colorado Springs in September 1921.
