Nancy Seger - obituary

A loving mother, with a passion for her grandchildren, Nancy L. Seger was an extraordinary woman. Her life was not marked by glitz or glamour, but instead by her dedicated work, which afforded her both a happy place in life, and a family that loved her dearly.

As World War II continued to occupy the world's attention in 1943, Rodger and Hammerstein's Oklahoma combined the serious mood of the country with entertainment for the first time. Nancy was born on June 22 of this year to her parents, Ralph D. and Lois (Howe) Soper. They lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where her father worked as a manager in the local Warner Dairy, while her mother was a homemaker. Nancy was the third of five children, though her two older brothers, Derwin and Richard, were from her mother's previous marriage. She was later followed by her younger two siblings, Carol and James.

Growing up in Ann Arbor, Nancy enjoyed swimming at the local pool in the summer with her sister Carol, and later as a teenager, she loved frequenting Everett's Drive-Thru. Nancy attended the area schools and graduated from Ann Arbor High School. In her senior year, she worked part-time at Quality Bakery in downtown Ann Arbor, but after graduating high school, she entered the Cooperative Occupational Training Program. Upon completing this program, Nancy took a job at Ann Arbor Bank for several years before going to Bell Telephone Company. She remained with Bell, working in various divisions throughout the country as her family moved about, until her retirement in the early 1990s.

Nancy married George Seger in Ann Arbor and was blessed a son, Clark, whom she adored. Because of George's occupation, the family left Ann Arbor to live in Florida for several years and then spent 3 years in Atlanta, Georgia. From there, the family relocated to Salisbury, North Carolina but ultimately settled in Kernersville, North Carolina, where she stayed for the rest of her life. During this time, Nancy began taking college classes and throughout her family's moves, she was committed to continuing her studies and she proudly received an Associate Degree in computer technology from Forsyth Technical Community College.

For Nancy, family was the greatest source of happiness in her life. Supportive and loving, she took great pride in her son, Clark, his wife, Leslie, and her two precious grandsons, Nicolas and Trace. Nancy enjoyed time spent together as a family, but she especially cherished the moments she spent with her grandsons after picking them up at daycare and stopping by McDonald's for some fun. She often brought them apples for treats and was always buying them t-shirts. Although her health began to decline about 3 years ago, limiting her mobility, Nancy still looked forward to babysitting and seeing her grandsons' smiling faces.

Nancy was always very independent and had a generous spirit; her heart never emptied of love for those around her. Besides caring for her family, Nancy also volunteered at different AT&T charity events at the local coliseum and was a member of the Red Hat Society for a while. She enjoyed bowling on leagues through the years and was an animal lover, particularly of cats. Wherever Nancy lived, she always made it her home, but she maintained her heart was truly home in Ann Arbor. Through her warmth and generosity, Nancy exemplified all the wonderful things that a mother and grandmother should be. She will be deeply missed.
