Helen Smith - Citizen of the year

"The 1979 Foley Citizen of the Year was born in Fergus and moved to Foley in 1938 to teach at Foley S.S. No. 2. She taught for one and one-half years and, in 1940, married Phil Smith, a local contractor and native of Foley. Mr. Smith died in 1964. The couple had three children: John, a civil engineer in Toronto; Carol, Mrs. Jim White of Orville and Liz Vanassac, who, with her husband, operates a French restaurant in Toronto. There are four grandchildren all of whom were present for the evening.
According to Mrs. Clare, Helen Smith was chosen for Foley Citizen of the Year because of her very active involvement with community affairs. Since 1954 she has been an active member of the C.C. Club and has served as president and secretary of this organization. Mrs. Smith is a charter member of the Foley Ratepayers' Association. She is treasurer of the Foley Agricultural Society and secretary of the Foley Historical Society through which she has been involved in working towards the establishment of a museum.
A faithful member of Foley United Church, she is the church treasurer and superintendent of the Sunday school."
